Laois has one of the worst ratings for unfinished houses in the country according to a new report.
Figures published in a Department of the Enviornment report this week show that there are 483 vacant residences in the midland county. While this is not the higest number in a country, it is the sixth worst rate when it comes to the number of vacant dwellings per 1,000 households. There are 17 vacant houses for every 1,000 households in Laois.
Nationally there are 16,881 vacant houses. There are 1,770 unfinished estates of which 1,100 are in a seriously problematic condition.
Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Jan O’Sullivan said she expected just a fraction of the unfinished estates around the country would have to be demolished.
