CLEAN UP LAOIS WEEK
This week is Clean Up Laois Week. The Committee would encourage residents groups, clubs etc. to clean up their areas. Bags and litter pickers are available from 0872686070. The bags will be collected on Friday. Photographs of the litter pick are welcome and can be shown on our Facebook site; Household litter will not be collected.
SOCIAL IN KILLASMEESTIA
A Social will take place in Killasmeestia Community Centre on this Friday night April 19 with music by the Kelly Family. Dancing will be from 9.30pm to 12.30am and supper will be served.
Badminton continues every Wednesday and Sunday evening in the new school. Matches are now being played in the club tournament.
A Choir practice for Confirmation will take place in St Canice’s Church, Borris in Ossory on Thursday night April 18 at 7.30pm. Members of the four choirs in the parish are invited to attend.
TIR NA nOG PRESCHOOL
Tir na nOg Preschool in Borris in Ossory is now taking enrolments for September 2013. Tir na nOg caters for children from 2 to 5 years and free places are available under the ECCE scheme. There will be an Open Week from April 15 to April 19 when anyone interested may call into the school or alternatively they may contact Lillie at 086-1993984.
The annual Lourdes Invalid Fund collection will be taken up at all Masses in the parish next weekend Saturday April 20 and Sunday April 21. Support would be very much appreciated.
PROGRESSIVE 25 DRIVE
The results of last week’s Progressive 25 Drive in the O’Brien Hall were as follows 1st Seamus Byrne and Sean Finan, Mary Maher and Jacob Fairbrother , 2nd - John and Catherine Dalton, 3rd P.J.Holohan and Michael Muldowney, 10th game – Jim Walsh and John Mooney, 20th game – Mary Kelly and Noreen Ryan, The Progressive 25 Drive will continue next Thursday night in the O’Brien Hall at 9pm.
JOSEPH THOMPSON MEMORIAL BILLIARDS
The Joseph Thompson Memorial Billiards Tournament commenced recently in the O’Brien Billiard Hall. On last Friday night, last year’s beaten semi finalist Paul Mc Laughlin (Edenderry) defeated Borris in Ossory man Liam O’Brien by 500 – 439.
CAVANAGH PERPETUAL CUP BILLIARDS
The pairings for this year’s Cavanagh Cup Billiards final is Joe Doheny V Liam O’Brien, both are previous winners of the competition. It promises to be a great final between these two experienced players.
4 MONTH DRAW
The first draw in the 4 Month Draw in aid of Knockaroo Church Renovation Fund will take place on Friday April 26 so there is only a short time left for anyone who still wished to purchase a ticket. Please contact the promoter in your area. There will be cash prizes - 1st prize - €1000, 2nd prize - €300, 3rd prize – €100. The subscription is €10 per month or €40 for the four months. There will be a special prize of €200 on the first night for fully paid up members and a promoter’s prize of €100 per month. The remaining draws will take place on May 31, June 28 and July 26 in St Canice’s Parish Hall, Borris in Ossory at 7pm.
FINE GAEL AGM
The Annual General Meeting of Borris in Ossory Fine Gael Branch took place recently with a very good attendance. Among the speakers were Deputy Charlie Flanagan, Councillors Michael Lalor, Martin Phelan and John King, all of whom spoke on the present situation both locally and nationally. Members complained about the state of the secondary roads in the area and questions were asked about the property tax, valuation of houses etc. Also discussed was the feared closure of Abbeyleix and Shaen Hospitals. It was learned that no decision had been reached to date. The following officers were elected for the coming year – Chairman – Joseph Campion, Hon Secretary – Conor Bergin, Hon Treasurer – Eric Leahy, PRO – Michael Coyne. A vote of sympathy was passed with the family of the late Aidan Kelly RIP who passed away since the last AGM.
