A trip will take place from October 7-11, 5 days 4 nights with 4 B&B’s with evening meals staying in Torquay in Devon. A great Bingo is held every Tuesday Night at 8.30pm in the Rathdowney Community Centre. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Bingo is run by the Community Centre Group.


Open every Thursday morning from 10am to 12 noon at the old convent school. It is great opportunity for all men to come together to share their skills and talents, learn new ones or simply meet for a chat and a cuppa. New members welcome every week.


On Sunday April 21, the club are holding their second Sportive over 100k and 50K. Starting at the GAA sign on from 9am, 100k starts at 10am, 50k starts at 11am, food stops on both events, entry fee for both events €25 or €20 with Cycling Ireland Licence. Route is Rathdowney GAA centre to Coolfin, Mountrath, The Cut, Clonaslee, Cadamstown, Kinnity, Roscrea, Borris in Ossory and back to the GAA centre in Rathdowney. The results of the Smithwick’s perpetual cup are as follows: Juniors 1st Liam McCracken 315g. Seniors 3rd John Hogan 995g, 2nd John Murphy 1125g, 1st John Holohan 1150g. Well done to all competitors. The next competition for the Erkina Cup will take place on Sunday April 21. Entries taken in the square from 9-10am. Weigh-in at 6pm sharp in Corcoran’s bar. Usual rules apply.


Will take place on Sunday, April 28 at 3.30pm in the Rathdowney GAA field in conjunction with the community games. For all ages, boys and girls.


Back after the Easter break. The group meet every Friday morning in the Marion Centre (beside the RC Church) from 10-12. All welcome parents and minders with children from new born to pre-school.


Every Monday from 2pm to 4.30pm in the communal centre of Cuan Bhride. The club is here to exchange tips from beginners to experienced knitters. You can knit garments for yourself and your family. Some members have donated knit wear i.e. hats, scarves, baby hats and matinee jackets to Portlaoise maternity hospital, Temple Street, The Rotunda and Coombe Hospitals. They have also knitted vests for the children in Africa.


Meet every Monday, from 7pm-8pm in the square Rathdowney. There are several groups for walkers, walker/joggers, joggers all level of fitness welcome. If you are interested in starting to jog there is a beginner jogging group starting next week. Over 18’s only, high visibility vest must be worn. For further information contact Annie 087 1311770.


Ossory Cycling club would like to thank all their sponsors who contributed to the first ever Cycling Ireland championship Road Race on Easter Sunday and to all the residents and supporters who cheered the cyclist along the route. Also a special thanks to the marshals the Lost Souls motor bike club, to those who provided the lovely refreshments before and after the event. Our next big event is our Annual Cycling Sportive over 100k and 50K which takes place on Sunday April 21. Starting and finishing at the Rathdowney GAA Centre.


A clean-up of Rathdowney and surrounding areas will take place April 15-19, if everyone can tidy and sweep up in their own area and lend a hand to tidy up around the town. For litter pickers and bags please contact John King on 085 7207066.

School Fete

Rathdowney National School are holding a special Fete (cake stalls, bottle stalls, bric a brac stalls, book stalls, etc. afternoon teas and lots of children’s activities) in the Parochial Hall, The Square, Rathdowney on Sunday April 21, 2 to 6 pm. All are welcome. This event was re-scheduled from last weekend.
