CLLR Willie Aird has been elected as the last ever cathaoirleach of Portlaoise Town Council.
An elected member since 1979, this is the Fine Gael man’s third time in the chair, the first in 1982/83 and again in 2008/2009. With local councils to be abolished in 2014, Cllr Aird said it was a sad day in one way, but he is very honoured to be the last cathaoirleach.
He was proposed by Cllr Kathleen O’Brien and seconded by Cllr Jerry Lodge, with Cllr Lodge elected vice cathaoirleach. Cllr Aird’s win was by five votes to four, with Cllr Caroline Dwane nominated by Cllr Tom Jacob and seconded by Cllr Rotimi Adebari.
