An 18-year-old man found in an intoxicated state in the street holding a golf club has been charged with possession of an article with intent to cause an injury.

Aivis Zemgalis, 226 Roundwood Close, Maryborough Village, Portlaoise, was also charged with being intoxicated in a public place, at Ballyfin Road, Portlaoise, on May 30.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that Zemgalis was in a very intoxicated state and could offer no lawful reason for having the golf wedge.

“Does he play golf?” asked Judge Catherine Staines.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick replied that he did not play golf, and that he had been carrying the club for a friend.

“(The friend) doesn’t play golf either,” admitted Ms Fitzpatrick.

The matter was put back to February 6, 2014, for a probation report.
