A Stradbally couple are organising a special fundraiser in Stradbally next month, to raise vital money for two very worthwhile charities that have done much to help their little daughter.

The parents of Sophia Dunne, Elizabeth and Richard have relied on the support of both The Jack & Jill Foundation and Red Boots since their little girl was born and they are driving this fundraiser in an attempt to give something back.

“While everyone organises fundraisers all over Ireland for different things, with Jack and Jill, money that’s raised stays in Laois. So anything that we raise will be going directly to help kids in the county,” explained dad, Richard.

Elizabeth added: “When you are presented with a child like Sophia with special needs, there’s so many things that you have to fight for. You’re trying to secure support for her and it’s a constant battle. But Jack and Jill and Red Boots are two charities that supported us unconditionally.”

The fundraiser will take the form of a 5km/10km walk or run which will take place on Saturday, November 1 at 11.30am. The event starts at the Stradbally GAA Club and takes in a 5k loop of the local countryside before returning to the GAA club for the final 800m. Car parking and shower facilities will be available at the club.

Entry is €15 for the 10k and €10 for the 5k. There will also be sponsorship cards for anyone who would like to generate that extra bit of cash for charity. Whether a seasoned runner or a casual walker, this will prove to be a feel good event for everyone and refreshments will be available in Dunne’s pub afterwards. There will also be a draw for some superb prizes graciously donated from local businesses after the run.

The Dunnes have already been overwhelmed by the support and help from people in the locality in organising the event.

“The support from people, both locally and on the committee has been fantastic,” said Elizabeth. “The sponsors have been incredible. I don’t want to name names because there’s so many that we’d leave someone out. Nobody has said no.”

There are three ways to sponsor the event. People can register on the day, they can fill out a sponsorship card which is available from Dunne’s pub, or they can go online at http://www.mycharity.ie/event/runintowinter/.
