A Dublin man who tried to smuggle sleeping tablets into the Midlands Prison to his son who was serving a sentence was last week given the probation act.

Frederick Byrne, with an address listed at Shangan Road, Ballymun, Dublin 9, was caught at the prison on June 14, 2013.

Inspector Maria Conway told last week’s district court in Portlaoise that Byrne was visiting his son on the day and handed over a package containing 35 white tablets.

They were not a controlled drug, the inspector said, but were sleeping tablets, valued at €40.

Byrne had four previous convictions.

Judge Catherine Staines said it was a serious matter, but she applied the probation act, section 1.2.
