There is no budget to upgrade the Church of Ireland section of Portlaoise Cemetery.
In a written reply to the meeting, Martina Bracken, Environment, said the Portlaoise Employment Scheme workers may be involved in some maintenance works as part of their own work programme in the Stradbally Road cemeteries.
“Why is there walls up there when the walls have been taken down everywhere else,” Cllr Willie Aird enquired.
“It shouldn’t be them and us now, it’s different now than it was years ago.”
Cllr Noel Tuohy said you still have to be sensitive to other people.
Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley, who is a member of the cemetery comittee said the Church of Ireland had been left to their own devices, to a degree.
“We are led to believe that there is someone cutting the grass. The committee did a small amount of work in that part of the graveyard over the summer. But any money is appreciated.”
