Senior students from Coláiste Phobal Roscrea got a proper scare lately when they visited the reputedly haunted Leap Castle over the border in Offaly.
The 5th and 6th year leaving certificate applied students enjoyed a personal tour of the historical building, built in the 13th century.
They were greeted by the present owners of the castle, Sean and Ann Ryan, who led them on a tour while recounting stories about the castle and the turbulent history within the 4 walls, which included a bloody fratricide and a fire.
The students learned that the castle is built on an old ceremonial site. They visited the Great Hall and the Bloody Chapel, and were intrigued with stories of great battles and ghosts.
The castle has been the focus of many television shows, with a rumoured resident ghost known as ‘it’.
After the tour, Sean’s wife Anne surprised the group with some welcome refreshments and Sean, who is renowned for his musical talents, played a tune for them onhis tin whistle.
The students thank Sean and Anne for their hospitality, and the teachers who accompanied them on the day, Ms Larkin, Mr Maher and Ms O’Gorman.
