The public are being warned about an online scam which has deceived a number of local people that involves posting mobile phones to Nigeria.
A garda spokesperson has revealed that over the last month at least five Laois people have fallen victim to the scam, which has been advertised on such internet sites as Done Deal. The public are requested to post mobile phones to an address in Nigeria on the promise of monetary recompense, but once the phones are sent off no money is lodged in the injured party’s account.
“We’re advising people not to engage with this,” said the spokesperson. “There are plenty of shops in Ireland that do it legitimately if people want to, that’s the safer option.”
