A woman in her 80s was knocked unconscious during a robbery in Portlaoise, in what has been described as a very upsetting experience.
The gardaí have confirmed that the woman in her early 80s was knocked unconscious during a robbery that occurred near her home in Portlaoise, between 8.30pm and 9pm on a Monday evening.
The woman was knocked down during the incident and rendered unconscious for a period of time. She later received medical attention, and while she has since been released from hospital a garda spokesperson has said that the robbery had obviously been very upsetting for her.
A quantity of cash was taken during the robbery and this was not recovered.
A local man in his late 20s was arrested and charged with the offence at last week’s Portlaoise District Court, and he has been remanded in custody.
There were also a number of burglaries recorded around the county within the past week. Forced entry was gained to Portarlington Leisure Centre in the early hours of March 12 and a quantity of cash was taken. The gardaí are studying CCTV footage and it is believed that one male was involved.
A business premises on Main Street, Mountrath was broken into in the early hours of March 11 and a quantity of sports clothing taken. CCTV footage from the scene is currently being studied.
And a number of sheds in rural areas were targeted recently by thieves with tools the main items taken. The gardaí have also confirmed that gates were taken from a private residence in Cappagh North. The public are advised to be on the lookout for anyone selling second-hand tools of an unknown origin, and to contact the gardaí if people have any suspicions.
