Two Portlaoise Gardaiwere injured while carrying out their duties over the Bank Holiday weekend.

One officer required four stitches at Portlaoise Hospital, after he was assaulted during an arrest for dangerous driving.

The second officer was punched across the face, while attending to an altercation at 7.15am on Sunday morning, August 2.

“Assaults on members of the Gardai are on the rise, and it’s not acceptable. We are not punching bags,” a spokesperson for Portlaoise Garda Station said.

“We are here to protect the peace and peoples property, The less members we have available, the less policing we can do. It all has a knock on effect on what we can do.”
