Fees cap needed on estate charges

LEGISLATION is needed to ensure there is a maximum amount that can be charged by management companies in housing estates and apartment blocks.

LEGISLATION is needed to ensure there is a maximum amount that can be charged by management companies in housing estates and apartment blocks.

The proposal was made by Cllr Alan Hand at the recent meeting of Portlaoise Town Council, who said that he knew of people having to pay up to €1,800 for such services as bin collection, cleaning and insurance.

“They’re not getting a good service for what they’re paying,” he said.

He also pointed out that apartments will be levied for the property tax in July, and water charges will soon come in.

“That’s another two envelopes through the door,” he said.

Cllr Caroline Dwane said she knew of some people living in apartments who have to pay over €1,000.

Cllr Matthew Keegan said he believed that residents associations should be given more power, to collect fees and monitor anti-social behaviour.
