CLLR Matthew Keegan would like to see roads in Portlaoise named after “local characters”, instead of the usual dignitaries.

At the recent town council meeting, he called for the council to establish the name of the road running from Ken Black’s toy store to Fitzpatricks tyres.

“I’d like to see it named,” said Cllr Keegan. “Streets should possibly be named after local characters rather than dignitaries.”

Cllr Jerry Lodge said the road from Supermacs was named Meehan Avenue, a name to be held in “high regard”.
