Lake Way eyesore is gone at last

The contentious walled depot built on the green in Lake Way, Kilminchy, is no more.

The contentious walled depot built on the green in Lake Way, Kilminchy, is no more.

Last Saturday the block walls were knocked down, and Laois County Council brought them to landfill in Kildare.

The previous weekend 17 tonnes of household rubbish were removed by a building contractor, in co-operation with the new Kilminchy Home Owners Company.

The walled depot, built without planning permission to hold building materials and never removed, had become a destination for illegal dumpers since 2011.

The previous management company, KMC, were ordered by Laois County Council to clear the site or face court last February.

However after planning permission was granted to replace it with a playground, the matter was closed by the council.

The playground was objected to by a resident of Lake Way, as there was no playground sited there on original plans, and no parking for it. This was overruled by Bord Pleanala.

When and where Kilminchy will eventually get a playground remains unclear.
