Portlaoise District Court Judge, Catherine Staines issued a stark warning to defendants who turned up late for last week’s court sitting.
After hearing that a number of defendants were not in court because they were using public transport to travel from other counties, Judge Staines said people could not just turn up when the feel like it.
“It’s not a matter of turning up when they feel like it,” Judge Staines told the solicitors in the court.
“Leaving cases to second calling is creating double work for the court clerk. I will be issuing bench warrants in future for people who are late,” she said.
Judge Staines later issued a bench warrant for William Mulrooney, Apartment 1, Library Apartments, Mountrath who was not in court when his case was called, as he was getting the 10.45am bus.
