Councillors “acting like
children” at council meeting

The Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council threatened to vacate her chair for the day, as September’s monthly meeting looked set to get out of hand.

“I will vacate this chair for the rest of the day,” Cllr Mary Sweeney said, after numerous attempts to ensure the meeting was carried out in an orderly fashion had failed.

Cllr Sweeny made her comments after Cllr Padraig Fleming tried to propose the taking in charge of Brotherton estate in Graiguecullen before she had even read out the motion, in an attempt to get in before his fellow councillors.

Cllr James Daly had also attempted to speak out of turn.

“You do what you want, but I just want to speak,” Cllr Daly told his party colleague.

Cllr Jerry Lodge offered the chair his support.

He said he was disappointed by some of his colleagues’ behaviour.

“You have my full support in your attempts to keep order,” he told the Cathaoirleach.

“I am disappointed in some of my colleagues. You act and rule in whatever way you think. Some of my colleagues are acting like children today,” he said.
