A 19-year-old Portlaoise man is in a critical condition, following a serious assault in Carlow at the weekend.
Carlow gardaí have confirmed that the man, named locally as Christopher Finn, is currently in an induced coma at Beaumont Hospital. He is in a stable, but critical condition.
An 18-year-old man from Ballylinan has been arrested in relation to the incident, and has been charged with a section three assault.
A garda spokesperson has revealed that the assault occurred at around 2.30am on the morning of Friday, December 13. A number of people were involved in an incident on Tullow Street in the centre of Carlow town, with words exchanged between two separate groups.
Following the assault, Mr Finn was brought to hospital in Kilkenny on the night, and then transferred to Beaumont Hospital. No weapons were used in the incident.
The assault was captured on CCTV and a number of witnesses have already come forward. An incident room was set up by Carlow gardaí, led by Superintendent Jerry Redmond, the district officer.
The garda spokesperson confirmed that the gardaí were able to make substantial inquiries early in the case.
The suspect was brought to a special sitting of Carlow District Court on Sunday (December 15), charged with a section three assault. He is due back before Carlow District Court this week.
A file is currently being prepared to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Although witnesses have come forward, the gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have seen the assault to contact them.
