Every Portlaoise town councillor has “stepped up to the mark” on road safety in St Brigid’s Place, according to Cllr Caroline Dwane, welcoming the news that €76,700 has been spent.

She was speaking at County Hall recently, in the week before the inquest into the death of little Maria Greene, who died after being struck by a van in the estate last year.

She had asked Laois County Council for an update on safety works, and was informed that traffic calming works are “substantially completed”. Works include four pedestrian crossings, a speed ramp, junction changes, improved work markings and signs.

The outstanding works, including the connection of an ESB supply and some carriageway markings, should be completed in the coming weeks.

“People have said the council have done a good job,” remarked Cllr Noel Tuohy, which was met with agreement from his fellow councillors.

“We can see the rewards for a relatively small amount of money to solve a huge problem,” said Cllr Willie Aird.
