Hospital FUNDRAISER NIGHT
Friends of St Vincent’s at St Vincent’s Community Nursing Unit Mountmellick are presenting a fundraiser on February 20 in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise. Doors open at 9 pm and music is featured by well-known Shawn Cuddy and his band. Tickets are €15 each and can be bought from Jackie Farrington on 087-277-0625. There will be plenty of raffle prizes on the night and we do hope you try to support us in raising some much needed funds. A fun night’s entertainment guaranteed!
Newly arrived at the library is a lovely selection of children’s fiction titles and picture books. Why not pop in and borrow one!
An exhibition of paintings by local artist Sarah Williams titled ‘A Town Called Mountmellick’ is on display in the library gallery until Saturday February 28. These paintings explore the lost landscapes of Mountmellick and among them are streets and shop fronts based in the town.
The library knitting/crochet group meets each Tuesday from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Bring along your needles and wool and join us for a cuppa and a chat.
LANGUAGES AT LIBRARY
Beginners Spanish Classes for adults start on Tuesday March 3. This is an eight week course and the fee is €50. Contact 057 8644572 for further details.
French conversation classes for adults begin on Friday March 6 at 11am. Classes will run for eight weeks and the course fee is €50. A native French speaker will facilitate the course. Contact the library to book a place.
PAINT YOUR PET
‘Paint your Pet’ workshops with artist Lorraine Walsh begin on Friday March 6 in the library. The classes will run for 4 consecutive weeks from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Classes are free but you supply your own materials. Contact 057 8644572 if you are interested in taking part.

MOUNTMELLICK WORK (EMBROIDERY)

All are welcome along to the yarnbomb meetings on Tuesday nights at 7.30pm in the Methodist Hall. Plans are underway for the 2015 yarnbomb. All who can knit and crochet at any level, from beginners upwards are most welcome to come along and join in the chat and cup of tea.
The AGM will be held on Wednesday February 18 at 10.30 am in MDA and we trust all members will attend.
The usual activities are: Mondays: Boccia in the Macra hall at 7.30pm. Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon (free bus from MDA at 11.15am). Thursdays: music and song in St. Vincent’s Hospital. New members always welcome, contact 086 0618955.
Registration and membership evening will be held on Wednesday February 11 in community sports centre. Juvenile registration with Athletics Ireland is €12 and senior is €20. This fee must be paid before an athlete can train or compete with an athletic club as it includes insurance.
The committee has decided that due to the shortage of trainers new juvenile athletes aged less than 10 years will only be accepted if their parents stay at the training sessions and travel to competitions with their child. This decision was taken in reference to Athletics Ireland Ethical Code.

Slieve Bloom Assoc
A well-attended meeting of the Slieve Bloom Association was held in the Green School, Rosenallis on Thursday January 22nd. The Imbolc Festival will take place on February 1st. We will meet at the carpark in Cadamstown at 2pm to drive up to the Bracket Stones for the usual craic to milk the symbolic goat. This was done in ancient times to ask for suitable weather for planting, growing and harvesting – sun and rain when required. All are welcome to attend. The articles on the Slieve Blooms and the Association for the 40th Anniversary of the Founding of the SBA book have been submitted and it will be on sale from Sunday April 12th at the Celebrations in the Community Centre, Kinnity. The last publication by the Slieve Bloom Association, which was for the 35th anniversary, sold out in days, keep a keen eye out if you wish to buy one as this is a limited edition. The next meeting of the Slieve Bloom Association will be in the ICA Hall, Mountmellick on Thursday February 19th at 8:30pm. CDs featuring St Joseph’s Sunday Choir are on sale. All proceeds go to the Cuisle Cancer Support Centre, which has helped many cancer patients and their families in Mountmellick and throughout Laois. On sale in Parish Office, library and local shops at €10.
