Fianna Fail Councillor, Catherine Fitzgerald became just the third female Cathoirleach of Laois County Council, when she took on the chain of office last Monday, June 29.

In nominating Cllr Fitzgerald for the position, her party colleague, Cllr Jerry Lodge said she had been successfully returned at every election since she was first elected in 1994 - describing it as a ‘significant achievement.’

Cllr Caroline Dwane-Stanley was also nominated for the Chair by her colleague, Cllr Aidan Mullins, however she was defeated by a vote on a margin of 13 to 6.

Accepting the chain of office, Cllr Fitzgerald said she was honoured to be elected.

“I am honoured and privileged to be elected to this prestigious position as Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council, particularly in the year we will celebrate the Centenary of the 1916 Rising.”

Councillors paid tribute to both the incoming and out-going Cathaoirleach, congratulating Cllr John Joe Fennelly on his successful term.
