GARDAÍ are appealing to the public for information, following a break-in at a jeweller's shop at the weekend and burglaries at private residences.

The robbery at Abbeyleix Jewellers occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, January 16, on the town's Main Street.

The thieves gained access to the shop through the window of an upstairs flat and smashed a number of display cabinets, before making off with what garda decribe as "a substantial amount" of gold jewellery.

Garda say they have a number of suspects, one of whom may be a youth, but they appealed to anyone who may have witnessed anything or who has information to come forward.

In a separate incident in Rathdowney, two private residences were broken into in the early hours of Monday morning.

A quantity of cash and computer equipment was taken from the houses, which were occupied at the time, in the Johnstown Glebe area.

Garda are asking that anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious between the hours of 3am and 6.30am on Monday morning to contact them.

The number to call if anyone has any information on any of these incidents is 05787 31202.
