A CRETTYARD man tried to smuggle LSD into the prison by hiding it inside the top of a pen.

Tommy Delaney, Dromagh, Crettyard, committed the offence at the Midlands Prison, Dublin Road, Portlaoise, on July 30 last year. Inspector Martin Harrington told the District Court that the drugs were valued at €40 and were not recovered.

Delaney has one previous conviction for drug offences.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said that his client was visiting a friend and he was given the package to deliver. Mr Meagher said his client claimed he was told the strip of paper inside the pen top contained “tips for horses and phone numbers”.

“There was a joking reference to LSD, but he wasn’t sure it was LSD as it was wrapped in cellophane and wrapped in paper again,” Mr Meagher said.

Delaney was given a six-month sentence, suspended for two years.
