A PORTLAOISE woman “played to the gallery” when she drunkenly threatened to beat the head off a female garda, the District Court heard.

Antoinette Lawlor, 25 Oakleaf Place, Knockmay, was charged with failure to comply with the gardaí and using abusive behaviour in public, at Market Sq, Portlaoise, on March 11 this year.

Inspector Martin Harrington told the court that the defendant called a female garda “a stupid bitch” and threatened to beat the head off her. The garda subsequently said she believed Lawlor was “playing to the audience”.

Defence, Mr Declan Breen said his client was not a drinker at all, but she went to the pub with friends and had five drinks. When she left and was walking home she met people she knew and she “played to the gallery” when the gardaí approached her.

The matter was put back to September 13, for Lawlor to make a donation to the Garda Benevolent Fund.
