A PORTLAOISE man who showed no remorse for committing an assault and failed to pay any compensation to the injured party was sentenced to prison at last week’s district court.

Justin Greene, with addresses listed at 3 Harpers Lane and 35 O’Moore Place, Portlaoise, committed the assault in Kilminchy, Portlaoise, on September 8 last year. The case was previously adjourned for Greene to gather up compensation, but last week his solicitor, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client had not been in the position to gather the money.

“He accepts he has a debt to pay to society,” she said, adding that Greene has further business before the court in January and she asked Judge Staines whether she would consider dealing with all matters then.

Judge Staines declared that Greene had shown no remorse for the assault, and based on his probation report and a victim impact statement she ruled that he deserved to serve six months in prison.

Recognizance was fixed in the event of an appeal, on Greene’s own bond of €100 and an independent cash surety of €100.

Greene’s mother agreed to act as surety, and Greene was released on his own bail.
