Recounting the story of how a relative of his had her purse stolen, Cllr Alan Hand warned Portlaoise shoppers to be wary over the festive period.
“There will be an increase of retail activity in the lead up to Christmas and I’d urge people to be on the alert for possible pick pockets and handbag thieves.”
He said it was reassuring to see Gardaí on foot patrol in and around the shopping centre and he asked that the major retail areas be monitored in the days and weeks ahead also.
Cllr Hand said people will be making ‘big purchases’ and he suggested that they ensure valuable items are stored in a secure location.
Cllr Rotimi Adebari sounded a similar warning and expressed the hope that statistics will not go up during the busy festive shopping period.
Sergeant Tom Walton said Cllr Hand’s crime prevention advice was good and he again emphasised the point of not having goods visible on one’s property and to hide valuable items. He said it was hoped to increas foot patrols in the lead up to Christmas.
