MORE money is needed to fix roads around Ratheniska ahead of the National Ploughing Championships, according to a number of Laois county councillors.

“Lots of meetings are taking place and it is becoming clear that funding by the council is not sufficent. There was €50,000 extra but that doesn’t go very far. This is a golden opportunity to show Laois in a positive light”, Cllr James Daly told last week’s meeting of Laois County Council.

Cllr Daly called on Laois County Council to do a detailed study of the area.

“We need to provide extra funding - residents and landowners are adamant about this”.

He was echoed by Cllr Padraig Fleming who said the roads “may need substantially more than €50,000”.

Kieran Kehoe from Laois County Council said: “We have over the last few years been upgrading roads on top of works being planned.

“We are nearly there on the plan and once its finished I’ll show it to you .”
