A MOUNTMELLICK man has been given a suspended sentence for drunkenly grabbing a garda around the throat, as the officer attempted to deal with a domestic dispute in the man’s home.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said that Thomas McInerney, 22 Twomey Park, was in such a drunken state on the night of August 26 last year, he thought the garda was his brother with whom he had a disagreement. The court heard that McInerney had a row with his partner on the night and his brother had intervened.

“He has three children and this is a foul example to be showing them,” said Mr Meagher.

Judge Staines said it was a serious assault and McInerney could not use drink as an excuse. She sentenced him to six months, suspended for two years on condition he abstain from alcohol.
