There is no funding to repair and reconstruct Factory Street in Mountrath, councillors heard at the recent meeting of Borris in Ossory electoral area.

Cllr Michael Lalor asked that the council repair and reconstruct Factory Street, particularly at the Church of Ireland corner.

“There are lots of lorries going through Mountrath”, he said.

He was told by senior executive engineer Brenda Cuddy that works would be completed during September on the junction in Mountrath but that there was no funding for Factory Street.

“We are proposing the junction and only the junction, we will look at traffic lights and layout over the next four to five weeks.

Cllr John Joe Fennelly supported the notice of motion who stated that there were more lorries in Mountrath than before the motorway.

“A slight reduction would help the roads. It is a crazy problem”, he said. He was echoed by Cllr Brendan Phelan who said that at Borris in Ossory trucks were taking shortcuts to avoid the tolls.

“International companies go across small country roads”.
