A Portlaoise bus service has been axed, as part of Bus Éireann’s efforts to improve city to city journey times.

Bus Éireann have confirmed that as of last week, changes to their X8 Dublin/Cork route came into effect. Portlaoise and Urlingford have been axed from the service, to provide a city to city journey time between Dublin and Cork of 3 hours 45 minutes.

The company will continue to run 12 coaches a day in each direction from Portlaoise to Dublin on expressway route 12 and 12X.

This is the latest Laois service to be cut from the Bus Éireann schedule. Last summer, Abbeyleix, Durrow, Cullahill and Johnstown were all cut from the Dublin/Cork service.

Meanwhile, the National Transport Authority will soon commence a procurement competition to run a shuttle service between Portlaoise and Cashel stopping at Urlingford, to maintain connections between Portlaoise and Cashel.
