A Thurles man who “topped up” with drink and drove the morning after celebrating his engagement was last week fined €200 and disqualified from driving for three years.
Inspector Kiernan Keyes gave evidence that Fran McCormack, with an address at Glengoole, Thurles, was detected with 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, after being arrested at the Ballyroan Road, Abbeyleix, on May 5 this year, and brought to the garda station.
Defence, Mr Declan Breen explained McCormack had been celebrating his recent engagement at a barbecue on the bank holiday Sunday, and “topped up” on the Monday.
“He thought he was okay to drive and made the ill advised decision to move his fiancée’s car,” said Mr Breen, going on to admit it had been a “catastrophic decision”.
Judge William Early ruled as outlined.
