A Mountmellick man has been convicted and fined for having heroin.

Before last week’s sitting of the district court in Portlaoise was Gavin Lambert, 34 College View, Mountmellick, charged with the possession of drugs at Kirwan Park, Mountmellick, on December 21, 2013.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that Lambert was detected with diamorphine (heroin) worth €40.

Lambert had 18 previous convictions, including drugs, theft and road traffic offences.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said Lambert was struggling with a heroin addiction, but is now clean and doing a course through Coote Street.

Lambert was fined €100.
