A Portlaoise man who allegedly struck another man across the head with a high-heeled shoe during a Traveller brawl in the street has been charged with assault causing harm and violent disorder.

Michael McDonagh, with an address listed at 4 Highfield Meadows, Portlaoise, was charged with committing the offences at Market Square, Portlaoise, on February 19, 2012.

At last week’s district court, Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that there was a large public order incident on the night involving a number of Traveller families. Insp Farrelly said that McDonagh was observed striking a man across the head with the high-heeled shoe, and he was later identified via CCTV footage.

Judge Catherine Staines put the matter back to September 18, for McDonagh to enter a plea or for a hearing date to be fixed.
