A MOUNTMELLICK shopkeeper last week chased off a knife-wielding thief who attempted to rob his store.
Portlaoise gardaí have revealed that last Friday, April 20, a local man in his 20s entered Hanlon’s shop on the town’s O’Moore Street at around 10.25pm. Brandishing a knife, the man demanded that the shopkeeper empty the contents of the till.
However, the fearless shopkeeper stood his ground and refused the assailant, despite the fact that the man was threatening him with the weapon. The would-be robber then left the shop empty-handed.
The gardaí have confirmed that the man was later arrested and brought to the Portlaoise Garda Station for questioning. He will be appearing before a sitting of the District Court.
This is not the first time that thieves have been foiled in this Mountmellick business. A similar incident occurred back in October, 2008, when two youths, one of whom was armed with a knife, fled the store after the shopkeeper refused to hand over the money from the till.
The shopkeeper declined to comment on the latest incident.
