Third theft for Latvian national

A Latvian national has been given a suspended prison sentence for committing his third theft offence.

A Latvian national has been given a suspended prison sentence for committing his third theft offence.

Before last week’s Portlaoise District Court was Dmitrijs Mikalajuns, 40 Bianconi Way, Portlaoise, charged with theft at Bradshaws, Stradbally Road, Portlaoise, on September 17.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that the defendant stole an air pump valued at €60. Mikalajuns had previous convictions for theft, and road traffic offences.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said that 32-year-old Mikalajuns had been living in Ireland for ten years. He has three children and works occasionally as a farm labourer.

Mr Meagher said Mikalajuns had been in the shop and made an impulse decision to take the item. He was stopped by staff and immediately gave up the stolen goods.

Judge Catherine Staines imposed a six-month sentence, suspended for two years, and warned him he would go to prison if he offended again.
