A mother and her infant child escaped unharmed following a Mountmellick house fire this morning (Wednesday, September 12).
Laois Assistant Chief Fire Officer Anthony Tynan explained that the fire services were called to a house at Cullenbeg Park at approximately 10.50am and the fire, which was confined to one room, was under control within fifteen minutes.
The woman and her baby had evacuated the house before the fire services arrived and an ambulance was called to the scene as a precautionary measure.
The house was extensively smoke damaged and the fire did not spread to any other houses in the estate.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Tynan said it was potentially a very serious incident and it is fortunate the occupants got out in time.
The cause of the fire is being investigated and Assistant Chief Fire Officer Tynan urged people to ensure that the smoke alarms in their homes are properly maintained and working.
