AMBITIOUS plans by Barrowline Cruisers of Vicarstown to build a new passenger barge have been put on hold owing to the unavailability of funding.

The project was subject to the receipt of grant aid from Laois Leader and the build time for the barge was expected to be eight months.

“We’re very disappointed it isn’t going ahead but hopefully it will some time in the near future,” explained Orla Crean of Barrowline Cruisers.

Tenders had been sought for the design, commission and fit out of a 58-foot by 12-foot widebeam passenger barge with a capacity for 48 people plus crew. A galley snack bar was planned for on board along with male and female toilets.

“There are very few barges in Laois and it would have been a fantastic tourist attraction for the county,” said Ms Crean who thanked Laois Leader for their support of previous projects undertaken.
