The GAA President Liam O’Neill has been crowned Leinster Express Laois Person of the Year for 2012

Mr O’Neill was presented with his award by the Leinster Express Editor Pat Somers at the Laois Community and Voluntary Awards in Portlaoise awards night on Wednesday, November 21 in the Killeshin Hotel.

The GAA man from Trumera was one of more than 70 people and groups who were recognised forn the voluntary efforts in their comunities. The awards were hosted by the Laois Community Forum and supported by Laois County Council, the Laois Sports Partnership and the Leinster Express.

The other big award of the night was the Laois Community Forum Unsung Hero Award. It went to Maureen O’Gorman from Clonaslee for her tireless work with the Tidy Towns and other local activities.

There were six other award winners.

The Portlaoise Parish Centre to the award in the Community Service and Support Category while the Sports and Leisure winner was St Anne’s AFC, Ballylinan. The organisers of the Abbeyfest festival in Abbeyleix was chosen in the Arts and Culture section while Abbeyleix Tidy Towns won out in the Heritage and Environment category. The Children and Young People Award went to the Graiguecullen and Killeshin Parish Youth Group.
