A PORTLAOISE man who had bought fireworks for Halloween was fined in Portlaoise District Court last Thursday April 4.

Thomas Kerry of 34 St Brigid’s Place, Portlaoise appeared before Judge Catherine Staines charged with possession of the illegal fireworks, which included 350 bangers.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that a search was conducted by Gardaí of a house in Clanmalire, Portarlington on October 26, 2011, and 35 packets of bangers and several packets of rockets were discovered.

“Mr Kerry was cautioned, and he replied that he had bought them to supply his family,” said Inspt Harrington.

Defending solicitor Philip Meagher told Judge Staines that Kerry was aged 44 with three children, and on disability benefit.

“There are a number of dads in the residents association who got involved in fireworks. They would say it was well managed and it was done in a very safe manner. Previously children were doing it by themselves,” Mr Meagher said.

Mr Kerry was fined €200 and given four months to pay.
