Long live the roundabouts

DOES Portlaoise have the dubious honour of having the stretch of road with the most roundabouts on it in Ireland?

So asked Cllr Matthew Keegan at last week’s meeting of Portlaoise Town Council, referring to the stretch of road from the church to the garda station which has six roundabouts.

“Every week someone says Portlaoise has more roundabouts than any town,” he said, before adding: “I’m a great supporter of roundabouts - long may the roundabouts live.”

Engineer, Mr Tom O’Carroll remarked that the alternative to roundabouts is “traffic lights or close the roads”.

In a reply from the roads department, Laois County Council said they were not aware of whether any other roads in the State have as many roundabouts.
