Pepper-sprayed for abusing guards

A PORTLAOISE man had to pepper-sprayed by gardaí after becoming aggressive when they attempted to seize a vehicle on his property.

A PORTLAOISE man had to pepper-sprayed by gardaí after becoming aggressive when they attempted to seize a vehicle on his property.

Paul Worthington, 4 Liogard, Portlaoise, attempted to physically stopped the gardaí removing the vehicle on December 17, 2011. Inspector Declan Dunne gave evidence that Worthington threatened the gardaí and continued to be abusive, until pepper-spray was finally deployed.

Worthington has 15 previous convictions.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher explained that the gardaí had been pursuing a car on the day and they stopped near Worthington’s house. Worthington had been standing outside his home with a group of people and one of his group made a comment which attracted the gardaí. When they went to arrest one of the group Worthington intervened. Worthington was fined €300.
