Council cut prices by €30k to sell houses

Laois County Council have sold three houses in Portlaoise for €30,000 less than their value two years ago.

At their final summer meeting,county councillors agreed to the sell 362 Market Mews, 410 Market Mews and 365 Market Mews for €65,000 each The houses are located in Maryborough Village off the Mountrath Road.

But according to the property price register, a house sold in the estate in March 2011 for €100,000, which was below the market price.

The houses were sold to Brid and Anthony Cunningham, 10 Ashbrook Gardens, Mountrath Road, Portlaoise, Merta Merchel and Karol Poskrop, 21 Rockview Drive, Mountrath Road, Portlaoise and Richard Adams and Catherine Moore, 11 Lakeglen, Portlaoise.

The council have also advertised a three bedroom semi-detached house in the same estate for €89,000 in the affordable homes section on their website.

Cllr, Willie Aird supported the sale of the houses.

“I would like to thank the housing section for pursuing the sale of these houses. A lot of work goes into it and they are good value in my opinion,” he said.

Last year, councillors were concerned about selling a house in Market Mews to a buyer with a Dublin address, and discussed putting in a clause that purchasers must live in the house,
