Decision on Abbeyleix Hospital no nearer to being reached

Two years since the HSE first announced plans to close Abbeyleix Hospital, a final decision on the nursing home’s future is no closer.

Two years since the HSE first announced plans to close Abbeyleix Hospital, a final decision on the nursing home’s future is no closer.

On November 2, 2011, the HSE first announced their intention to close the unit on a phased basis. Weeks later, they announced they were to close Shaen Hospital.

An action committee was formed and they held two protest marches. Residents also went to the High Court to stop the HSE from removing them. The HSE then announced a 12 week consultation process.

The consultation finished last September, but the Minister did not receive the report until January of this year.

On September 20, the Department of Health said that following its consideration of the report, the process was expected to conclude shortly. But a decision on the future of Abbeyleix is still no closer.

On Monday (November 4), the HSE said: “The Department of Health sought clarifications on a number of points within the documents submitted by the designated officer. The HSE is currently working to clarify these points and will provide a response to the Minister once completed.”
