Stole two eight-packs of beer

An Abbeyleix man convicted of stealing beer was last found to have been in breach of a suspended sentence, and was sent to the circuit court in Roscommon.

An Abbeyleix man convicted of stealing beer was last found to have been in breach of a suspended sentence, and was sent to the circuit court in Roscommon.

Before last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court was Alan Byrne, 54 Thornberry, Abbeyleix, charged with theft from Clelands Supermarket, Lower Main Street, Abbeyleix, on September 17 this year.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that Byrne entered the supermarket at 2.52pm on the day and took two eight-packs of beer without paying.

He was captured on CCTV and was arrested, admitting the offence to gardaí.

Byrne had 44 previous convictions, and was in breach of a suspended sentence previously imposed on him in the circuit court.

As he was in breach of the suspended sentence, Judge Catherine Staines sent Byrne back to the next sitting of the Roscommon Circuit Court, which was due to sit last Friday, October 17.

Byrne is due back in the local district court on December 9, for the consideration of the section 99 matter in the circuit court.
