No cash to ‘kickstart’ Portlaoise speed ramp

Cllr Willie Aird wants the council to ‘kickstart’ a programme to provide speed ramps in areas that need them in Portlaoise.

Cllr Willie Aird wants the council to ‘kickstart’ a programme to provide speed ramps in areas that need them in Portlaoise.

In a motion, Cllr Aird had asked the council if there was funding available for the installation of speed ramps in existing housing estates.

But in reply to the councillor’s request, John O’Donoghue in the Roads Department said there was currently no funding available to carry out these works.

“Can we not take money from the budget to do a couple and kickstart a programme.

“We were wrong that we didn’t insist on developers putting them in from day one. Even if we put in one or two per year, I don’t believe we can’t provide schemes to do a couple of ramps a year,” said Cllr Aird.

Supporting the motion, Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald said people were coming to the councillors looking for them.

“We have to be more positive. The programme of flashing lights at schools was very successful, I think that’s even finished now. There should be a budget for ramps.”

“Gerry Gibson asked the councillors to each submit a list of ramps, but nothing has happened since,” Cllr Jerry Lodge said.

“We need to make sure that we include it in next year’s budget.”

Describing them as “reckless drivers”, Cllr Lodge said it was the speed at which some drivers drove through estates which was causing the problem.“The only solution is to put in ramps.”

Cllr Caroline Dwane said since she came onto the council not one councillor had got money for ramps. “For nine Town Councillors to have to go back to these people and tell them ‘no’ is a joke. The council will have to find money somewhere.”
