In the early hours of Thursday morning, September 22, the gardai swooped on a grow house off the busy Portlaoise to Mountmellick Road. It is understood that the 1,600 plants seized have an estimated street value of E600,000. Plants were being cultivated while some had been harvested.
Three men and a woman were detained during the opertion. It is understood two of those in custody are a man and a woman from China. The four have been detained in Tullamore Garda station. Locations in Kildare may also be searched as part of the opertaion.
In a seperated operation, earlier this month gardaí charged two English nationals of Vietamese origin arising after a raid on a house in Killenard. It was the second time the house had been used as a grow factory.
