Site promised by FF/PD Govt in 2007 still vacant
The site was earmarked for the new Garda Divisional Headquarters.
“There was a big announcement and a big fanfare. They put a sign up and nothing has happened since. The sign was recently removed,” he said.
Cllr Hand said overgrown trees were blocking the light into Stradbrook and asked the council to see if these trees could be cut back.
“The building has fallen into disrepair and looks an eyesore now.”
Cllr Hand said An Garda Siochana still needed a new headquarters and asked if there was future plans to put it there it had it been put on the back burner.
Supporting her party colleague, Cllr Caroline Dwane agreed that the building looked bad.
“It does look dreadful, particularly from the Block Road. Is there anything that can be done to improve the appearance,” she asked.
While Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald said the need for a new station in Portlaoise would get worse if small stations were closed. The council have not yet received a response from the OPW.
