Laois’ thatched cottages are now in the protected buildings list, making them eligible for a preservation grant, but time and money are limited.
This Friday, April 13 is the deadline to apply for the Structures at Risk Fund, which helps to safeguard protected structures that are in immediate danger of significant deterioration, such as buildings that have window or roof damage. There is only €500,000 available for the grant scheme nationwide.
Recently thatched cottages were added to the protected structure list, and Laois County Council who can forward just two projects on behalf of the county, are urging the public to apply quickly.
Last year their two chosen applications were for a shopfront in Mountrath, and for St Peter’s Church in Portlaoise, the latter being the only successful project to receive a grant. A total of six applications camme in last year.
“Previously we had the conservation grant scheme, and the civic structures grant. This replaces both of those. We have had a bit of interest already. The grant can be for private buildings, but is not for maintenance or alterations, only if the windows were gone, or parts of the roof, and they are in immediate danger,” said an official from Laois County Council.
Application forms are available from county hall or www.laois.ie, and should be sent to Rosa Bray 057-8664107 (firstname.lastname@example.org) by 12 midday on Friday April 13.
