Crazy cuts to pothole budget

“Crazy,” exclaimed Cllr Marc Connolly at Mountmellick Town Council monthly meeting last week.

Laois, he said, was this year getting only €820,000 for road maintenance. And of this, half a million was to be spent on one roundabout in Portlaoise.

Yet, he complained, there’d been two hikes in road tax. He warned: “This will bring us back to the ‘80s when people were putting new tyres on their cars every couple of months.”

Earlier, Cllr Paddy Bracken said work would be done this year in O’Moore Street and on providing safety measures at Hickey’s Bridge.

Cathaoirleach Rosemary Whelan: “There’s certainly need for traffic calming in that area.”

Cllr Bobby Delaney said there was pothole near Flanagans in O’Moore Street and “you would get lost in it.”

He suggested speed indicators at Hickey’s Bridge and Irishtown. Residents of the latter area want new ways to slow down traffic, he said.
