An appeal for help by hen rescuer Karen Rogers in the Leinster Express has brought an immediate response from the community.

Since beginning Laois Hen Rescue two years ago, Ms Rogers saved and rehomed 26,500 laying hens destined for slaughter.

When her husband Colin was hospitalised with a stroke, she found herself struggling to care for her own flock of hens and ducks, and faced shutting down her rescue operation altogether.

Four volunteers contacted Ms Rogers to offer help.

“An elderly man came out to clean the shed, and I have three other volunteers now helping me. I am so delighted they came forward,” she said.

Ms Rogers wants to send out grateful thanks also to the anonymous donor who posted €150 to her, together with a cut out copy of the article, but no name or note.

“I can’t thank them personally but I am so grateful, and so shocked,” she said.

The money will go towards care of her rescued fowl, while the next rescue planned for November is now firmly in her diary. See laoishenrescue on facebook or call 087 9667828 for more.
